About the Playwright

Colby Halloran was a company member of the Hilberry Classic Repertory Theatre from 1974-1976. She graduated from the Circle-in-the-Square Professional Acting Workshop in New York City in 1978, where she studied with Nikos Psacharopoulos. From 1977-1980 she performed at his theatre, The Williamstown Theatre Festival.

In 1980, she became co-artistic director of The Theatre Exchange, a 50-seat loft theatre in Lower Manhattan, founded by Charles Clubb. When Mr. Clubb was killed in 1981, Colby closed The Theatre Exchange. She has been writing ever since.

Her short stories have been published in The Southern Review, Emrys Journal and American Chordata. Colby has completed three novels, Locum Tenens, Portrait of a Country Doctor in Wales, Pascal’s Vases, a memoir which reads like a novel and Bicycle Boy, the story of The Theatre Exchange — it’s hopeful beginning to its tragic end.

Bird of Passage, her first full-length play, premiered at the Bagaduce Theatre September 2019.  (see “News” on this website). In November 2018, it was chosen “Best in Festival” at the Chameleon Theatre Circle’s 19th Annual New Play Contest. HRC Showcase Theatre has chosen Bird of Passage for its 2023 staged readings in New Lebanon, MA.

“Somewhere Between Lost and Found,” her fifteen-minute short play, was presented at the Ypsi THRIVE New Short Play Festival in September 2017.

Colby is a Member of the Dramatist’s Guild and resides with her husband in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
